Attorney Blames School System For Redistricting Problems

Attorney Sonny McLawhorn, representing hundreds of parents threatening to sue Pitt County schools over a reassignment plan set to begin this fall, says the school has no one to blame but itself. McLawhorn says school officials repeatedly used race, something he says is illegal, as a primary factor over the last few years in determining where students attend school. McLawhorn says this ultimately led to the situation Pitt County schools is in now, trying to balance schools. School Board Chairman Michael Dixon says that's not the case. Dixon notes several other factors like bus routes and building capacity are also used when students are assigned to schools. The Office of Civil Rights is reviewing the case to see if the school board reassignment plan is legal. McLawhorn expects to have a decision in a few months.
