The North Carolina Senate is just about done with its extreme makeover. A two million dollar renovation of the state Senate chamber is nearing completion. The House got a scaled-down renovation two years ago. But in the other chamber, the work is so extensive that even political veterans may soon forget what the Senate once looked like. Some preservationists worry that the changes are hiding the striking modern design that was unveiled more than 40 years ago, when the Legislative Building replaced the old State Capitol. But the carpeting was threadbare, desks were worn, and the microphone system needed to be fixed every session. George Hall, director of legislative services, says, "The chambers had really gotten to be an embarrassment."
