An Innovative Way To Keep Rural Communities Safe

Putting more law enforcers on the streets of rural communities; that's the goal of an innovative program in Washington County. In the town of Roper, the more than 600 residents have only one deputy on patrol, who works 40-hours a week. Mayor Bunny Sanders says that's not enough. She plans to hire more off duty sheriff's deputies who can form an independent law enforcement agency to provide 24-hour coverage of her town. And she's not stopping there. With the help of other small towns in Washington County, she hopes to take this issue of security to the North Carolina General Assembly. The first off-duty officer will be sworn in Monday in Roper.
