One of the biggest fires in Columbia's history nearly knocked out one of Tyrrell county's largest employers.
White Cap Linens, a huge supplier of clean sheets and laundry to the Outer Banks cottage and hotel industry, sustained a huge fire in its new warehouse Monday night.
The company had just relocated from Manteo, about two weeks ago. Much of the heavy equipment was lost, but the inventory of linens and bedsheets was largely undamaged.
Right now, White Cap will reopen its Roanoke Island plant with about 30 employees. White Cap also provides jobs for more than 200 additional employees during the summer tourism season.
No one was hurt in the fire. There's no word on what caused it.
