Do You Know the History of the Confederate Monument?

The Confederate monument at the Pitt County courthouse is stirring up controversy among residents. We researched the history of the monument and found some surprising facts.

The monument was built in 1914 on land donated by Pitt County. Greenville historian Roger Kammerer says residents of the county, black and white, donated money for its construction.

Kammerer believes the statue serves a historical purpose and points out at least a thousand black soldiers from Pitt County served in the Civil War.
