Earlier this month, former Washington County Sheriff Stanley James was convicted of embezzling money while he was sheriff. Now James' mom is speaking out in her son's defense. Elsie May James still believes her son, Stanley, is innocent and did not pocket county dollars, even though a jury found him guilty of just that. James' mom tells WITN her son loved being sheriff and that he never used any of the funds that were questioned in the trial for anything other than the sheriff's department. Stanley James is currently being held at the Martin County jail awaiting a hearing to appeal the judge's decision of no bond. James' 60 day sentence will not begin until the conclusion of that hearing.
