Pokemon Tournament Helps the Mind

While the Olympics test the body, spirit and determination, a whole different kind of athlete was at a tournament Sunday in Greenville.

It was a tournament for the mind, as card wielding Pokemon players squared off at the Hampton Inn in Greenville Sunday afternoon. Things kicked off around 1:30, and these players have just as much devotion as Olympic athletes, because the tournament lasted until eight Sunday, totaling nearly seven hours of training. But it also educates those who play. Officials say, it teaches reading skills because they have to be able to read the cards, it teaches mathematics because they have to count out how much damage is done to the Pokemon. Plus, they say it makes you think strategy.

The players were all playing, and training, with goals of making the Pokemon world championship, held in California.
