Armed with thousands of signed petitions some citizens in Bertie County are taking concerns over the schools to federal court. A convoy of concerned citizens met Thursday afternoon in Bertie County and headed for the federal courthouse in Elizabeth City. The group's goal was to hand deliver petitions with over 2,000 signatures to U.S. District Court Judge Terrance Boyle. One of the convoy's organizers, John Davis says they're hoping Judge Boyle will consider the petitions when making his decision concerning a proposal by the Bertie County School Board. The school board is required to submit a plan to the U.S. Department of Justice by March 1 to settle a desegregation lawsuit the school district is under from over three decades ago.
