Clearing The Way For Spring

Over 400 acres of marsh on mainland Dare County went up in flames Wednesday morning, and it's a good thing actually. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service torched reeds and dried shrub North of Mann's Harbor. A wildfire raced across the wetlands two years ago threatening homes in the area, and Wednesday fire handlers went to work to reduce the chances of it happening again. Officials say controlled burns are good for the environment, paving the way for new green growth in the spring. Other government agencies will be burning off huge tracts of protected land almost daily in coming weeks.
