It will be 20 years ago Saturday when the space shuttle "Challenger" blasted off into space, then blew up 73 seconds later in front of a stunned Nation. That day NASA lost seven astronauts, including Christa McAuliffe the first teacher and civilian in space, as well as Beaufort native astronaut Michael Smith. On Saturday, the space agency and family members of the fallen crew will gather at the Kennedy Space Center for a solemn ceremony to remember America's 24 astronauts who have died since 1964.
