Heating bills could drop by an average of $20 next month for a quarter of North Carolina homes, most of them in the central and western part of our state.
PSNC Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas yesterday asked state regulators for permission to cut natural gas rates by 12%. They say wholesale prices have taken an unexpected dive.
The state Utilities Commission will consider the proposals on Tuesday and is expected to approve the rate cut.
If approved, the cuts would slice the average residential bill by $20 in January.
Natural gas heating costs have soared 55% since last year.
