They acted without authority. That's what county commissioners in Bertie County are saying after the school board voted earlier this week to close three elementary schools in the county and build a new one. Commissioners say the school board does not have the authority to commit to funding a new facility without their approval first. Many parents who have children that attend Askewville, Aulander or J.P. Law Elementary, the three schools scheduled to close, are also upset by the school board's decision. A joint meeting between the school board and county commissioners is scheduled for December 19.
