He was a medical practitioner and a leader in Greenville for the last 50 years. The East Carolina University medical and academic community now mourns the loss of Doctor Andrew Best. Doctor Best was a Lenoir County native who opened his medical practice in Greenville back in 1954. He led efforts which helped to desegregate and change policies at Pitt County Memorial Hospital and ECU. He also was the first African-American board of trustee member at East Carolina University. Doctor Best died early Tuesday morning at the nursing home where he was living. Funeral services will be next Tuesday at the United Freewill Baptist Church in Kinston.
