A new trial date has been set for a woman accused of castrating a man after a judge declared a mistrial in the case.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that the attorney for Rebecca Dawson said the retrial is scheduled to start Aug. 25 in Harnett
County Superior Court.

The jury foreman told Judge Steve Balog in December that jurors were split 8-4 on charges of malicious castration and assault with intent to inflict serious injury.

Dawson was accused of using her fingernails to tear off a man's scrotum at a 2006 Christmas party. In closing arguments, the defense said Dawson tore Kevin Russ' scrotum in self defense. Russ testified at the previous trial that an intoxicated Dawson sank her nails into his scrotum after he refused to let her drive home.
