Eleven thousand bears live in North Carolina. Seven thousand of them are here in eastern Carolina. That's why Monday the start of bear hunting season is a big day.
For hunters in the northeastern counties, the season runs November 14 through the 19th and December 12 through the 24th. This includes Beaufort, Bertie, Craven, Dare, Jones, Pamlico and other surrounding counties.
In the southeastern counties, like Carteret, Onslow, Duplin and Pender, the season runs from November 14 to January 2. Each hunter is only allowed to bag one bear.
