Authorities now know exactly what happened to Gail Haddock Dail and her granddaughter Heather Roberts. At a press conference at the Craven County court house Thursday, the District Attorney, along with multiple law enforcement agencies, announced that all the evidence concerning their death points to an accidental drowning. But one question that remained unanswered until now was why were Gail and Heather traveling on Highway 55 if they were headed to Roanoke, Virginia? According to the District Attorney, the two were delivering flowers to a family friend before beginning their trip. The District Attorney says early morning darkness and fog may have also played a role in missing the detour sign, which authorities say may have caused Gail to continue down Turkey Quarter Creek Road to their tragic death.
