Voter Apathy In Non-Presidential Years

For everyone who cast their ballot Tuesday, there were plenty of people who choose not to vote in the municipal elections. In fact in 2002 only 47 percent of North Carolina's registered voters cast their ballot. Election officials think the public perceives non-presidential elections as less important. However, they say in reality, voting for local officials can impact your everyday life a lot more. Since 1974, one of the highest voter turnouts in our state for municipal elections was in 1990 when 62 percent of registered voters cast their ballots.
