Lottery Woes

The newest nominee to the North Carolina Lottery Commission is also the latest to quit. Retired teacher Shirley Frye was nominated for the commission Friday afternoon by Senate leader Marc Basnight. But a short while after she accepted, she reconsidered and withdrew her name. Frye's nomination was awaiting confirmation by Governor Mike Easley when she told Basnight's staff she was worried about the perception of a conflict of interest. Frye's husband is a partner in a law firm that represents media and retail clients, who could become involved with the lottery. Frye taught in public schools and was a professor at Bennett College. She also served as an administrator at North Carolina A-and-T. Her husband, Henry, is a former chief justice of the state Supreme Court.
