The Veteran's Memorial at the Greenville town common was rededicated Friday after two spelling errors were repaired. The monument displays the logos of the five armed forces, but the mottos of the Marine Corps and Coast Guard were misspelled. Originally dedicated in 1989, the mistakes went unnoticed until the Memorial Day observance this past May. Once discovered, the Pitt County Veterans Council, who originally provided the monument, vowed to have the errors corrected by Veteran's Day. The original engraver declined to make the corrections but another company, Greenville Marble and Granite, agreed to make the changes and charged just $1.00 for the work.
