COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The employer of an accountant who killed himself after his Hilton Head Island clients went missing in March says an audit reveals the man embezzled $2.1 million from different companies.
The Club Group said Tuesday that an audit of the accounts handled by Dennis Gerwing found he took money from clients for four years, depositing it into a hidden checking account that the company knew nothing about.
Gerwing committed suicide last month after police questioned him about the disappearance of John and Elizabeth Calvert. The couple were last seen in early March.
Club Group President Mark King says he was stunned to find out his partner of 21 years was stealing money.
The Calverts live part-time in Atlanta.
