Five Fallen Heroes From Local Military Unit

Five National Guardsmen from the same unit based out of Rocky Mount have died serving our country in Iraq in the past month.

Beaufort County native and ECU student Russ Gurganus is in that unit. He has seen some of his fellow guardsmen die. His father is a former Guardsman who spoke to WITN-TV Tuesday about life with a 20-year-old son fighting overseas.

Eddie showed WITN e-mails from his son about the horror of watching his brothers in war die on the battlefield. Russ enlisted with a close friend when he was just 17. He was sent on his first tour a month after he began his first semester at ECU. His parents expect him home later this summer.

We continually pray for the safety of all of our military....Bush and Cheney are so psychotic, they need to be there, in harms way. May God protect all of our sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, moms and dads that are in the senseless war. with a safe return home, may families and communities reconnect with open arms. I hope that all are able to receive full compensation for all. God Bless you Russ.
