It was a historic joint session of the North Carolina Senate and House Tuesday in Raleigh. Lawmakers met and voted Democrat June Atkinson as the state's new superintendent of public instruction. The vote resolved the nation's last undecided statewide election from November 2004. Also Tuesday, the house finance committee approved the Pitt County local sales tax option bill. The bill would allow Pitt County to levy a one-cent local sales tax to be used for local public schools and community colleges, if voters of the county approve the tax.
