Governor Mike Easley has $170 million to spend on recruiting and retaining teachers throughout the state. State lawmakers have appropriated those funds for things like signing bonuses for new teachers and pay raises. Rural school districts like Hyde County are especially hoping to get some of that money. The governor has until next July to come up with a plan on how exactly to spend it.
