Number of West Nile Virus Cases Over the Past Three Years

So far this year, there have been 109 cases of West Nile reported. Forty-five of these are in California. There have been three deaths. In our state, we are dealing with the first case of West Nile in Pitt County and that patient recovered. In 2004, there were just over 2500 cases reported nationally. One hundred people died. In our state, there were three reported West Nile cases in 2004 and no deaths. 2003 was the year when everyone sat up and took notice of West Nile and for good reason. There were nearly 10,000 reported cases and 264 people died. In our state, there were 24 reported cases with no deaths.
