Massive Accident Closes Road, Injures Several People

A chain reaction accident on U.S. Highway 64 that started with an 18-wheeler hitting a farm tractor, ends up with a second big rig on fire, and three people seriously injured. Troopers say it began just West of Tarboro in Edgecombe County at about 1:30 Thursday when one 18-wheeler collided with a slow-moving farm tractor, throwing the tractor driver out of his rig. Then, as other drivers stopped to help, another 18-wheeler hit cars and a horse trailer, burst into flames, and then slid off the road, hitting the first wreck, and two people standing on the shoulder of the highway. Those injured were taken to area hospitals. Troopers say it's unclear just what caused the accident. The West bound lanes of 64 were closed for nearly three hours.
