Hurricanes Take Toll On Commercial Fishing

Fishing is an industry coastal communities across Eastern Carolina have come to depend on for generations. Now, some say it's dying out. Cahoon's Seafood in Swan Quarter has been in business for over three decades, but owners of the company say hurricanes have taken a heavy toll on the waters they fish, depleting the amount of crabs, fish and other seafood their fisherman catch. Fishermen say the quality and size of their catch has also gone down since Hurricane Floyd. At one time Cahoon's Seafood sent out as many as thirty fishing boats a day; now it's less than five.
