Brunswick County Sheriff Indicted With Embezzlement

A grand jury in Brunswick County has indicted Sheriff Ronald Hewett on charges of embezzlement by a public official and obstruction of justice.

The Star-News of Wilmington reports the indictment was handed up on Monday. A hearing on whether he should be removed from office was also scheduled for later in the day.

Hewett has been sheriff since 1994. He was temporarily suspended from office last week after Brunswick County District Attorney Rex Gore took action on a petition filed by sheriff's department employees.

The petition sought Hewett's suspension on grounds that include willful or habitual neglect or refusal to perform duties of his office, willful misconduct or maladministration in office, and extortion.
