A father who tried to keep oncoming cars from running over his injured son, was struck himself on Highway 17. Both were killed.
It happened Saturday night outside of Vanceboro.
State troopers say 16-year-old Stephen Hollowell was crossing the highway with a friend when he became scared by a neighbors dog. Witnesses tell WITN News the teenager didn't look before running out into the road.
The 12-year-old who was with Hollowell then ran to alert the victim's father who lived nearby. That's when troopers say the father, also named Stephen Hollowell, ran out into the road and got hit while trying to stop traffic.
Troopers say the teenager died at the scene, while his dad died enroute to the hospital.
Neither driver will be charged in connection with the deaths.
