Spelling Bee Snafu In Pitt County

It's something many students look forward to, the spelling bee, getting the chance to compete and hoping to make it to the National Competition. But in Pitt County some students were disappointed when they found out they missed the event.

The regional spelling bee was originally slated for March 22, but due to the Easter holiday it was rescheduled for March 15.

A letter was sent out to the Pitt County Schools as a reminder, but the memo failed to mention that there had been a change to the date. Therefore, many participants were not notified.

Pitt county schools have apologized for the breakdown in communication and now students who missed out on the opportunity are looking forward to next year.

I recently, heard of the failure to do the task assignment on the Spelling Bee. I am shock that school administrators can take such a so what attitude on the issue when it comes to their students. "Oh well", may be they can compete next year. What an attitude. I suspect if the person responsible missed his paycheck he would be calling every admistrator in Pitt County School system about the paycheck. My response to him would be " you can get it next year". I am sadden that students are placed in such a low priority and this issue has been placed in who cares column. Shame on the administrators who failed to accept the significant of this debacle. I know if one student created a distrubance in the school the adminstrators would be in the newspaper, on TV and sending mail to parents boosting this will never happen again because we have taken measures to make sure our students are taken care of. WOE! be the student who got cheated out of an " Opportunity to Excel" for his school and future.

Editor could not immediately verify the name of the person responsible so post was edited.

There are some serious issues in the world today, and this is nowhere close to one. Seriously people, move forward to a real problem.

Wrong! These students should not have to look forward to next year. They should have their right to a spelling bee this year. How dare those officials take that away from these students who studied all year to prepare for this spelling bee and lose out of that chance due to someone(s) negligence? This is not fair to those students. They deserve their chance this year and not have to wait until next year.
