Future of Dike Draws Concern

Oftentimes with hurricanes inland flooding is a major concern. That’s what many towns, including Princeville in Edgecombe County, experienced after Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Now, a possible plan to protect Princeville from that kind of devastation again is drawing concern from neighboring Tarboro. The mayor there fears raising the height and extending the length of the existing dike in Princeville could spell disaster for his town. The Army Corps of Engineers is not expected to make a final decision on the matter until sometime in 2007.
