The News & Record of Greensboro reported that a joint-agency investigation has uncovered at least 30 fraudulent check cases that
have targeted more than 25 victims. Police believe there may be more than 25 people involved in the ring.
The ring, which authorities have investigated for several months, targeted residents and businesses through fake checks and bank cards using stolen identities and bank account numbers, and other identifying information.
Three people were arrested and charged on Wednesday. Police said
the counterfeiters create fake payroll checks, bank checks and
personal checks by computer. Those checks are made out to a third
party, who then cashes the checks at a local bank or business and
returns the funds to the counterfeiters.
