Currently, North Carolina only allows beer with an alcohol content of no more then six percent. But if a state bill becomes law, that could soon change.
The new law would allow the sale of beer with an alcohol level up to fifteen percent. Those who favor the bill say it would provide a product that's more expensive and therefore generate more sales tax for the state. Those opposed say it increases the chances for alcoholism and drunk driving.
Beermasters say the higher the alcohol content, the stronger the taste. They also say if restaurants begin selling the stronger beer, they may have to serve it in a smaller glass to control consumption.
