Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Orr says the state should consider suing the federal government for reimbursement for state-funded services provided to illegal immigrants.
Orr says if he's elected, he would pursue such a lawsuit if the
federal government doesn't meet future requests from the state.
The former state Supreme Court justice says the federal
government is obligated to help states with those costs. He says
Congress has failed to live up to its constitutional responsibility
to enforce immigration law or pass reforms that would resolve the
status of illegal immigrants in North Carolina.
Orr says the state could seek reimbursements for teaching
illegal immigrants in public schools, providing them indigent
medical care and incarcerating adults who are convicted of
felonies. He says the amount could range from $300 million to $500
