Washington Truck Catches Fire

A Beaufort County man had his brakes go out while driving, and his emergency brake malfunctioned setting his car on fire early Saturday morning.

WITN news crews captured this truck bursting into flames after the driver applied the emergency brake that in turn sparked a fire in part of the engine. It happened around 11:30 Saturday morning as the driver traveled north bound on Highway 17 South through Washington. Witnesses say the motorist told them he realized a red pick-up was on fire and so he pulled into the Tabernacle Independence Baptist Church parking lot where parishioners helped extinguish the flames. Chocowinity Volunteer Fire Fighters later arrived to assist the driver. No injuries have been reported.
