Swimming was banned Monday morning in Nags Head, as ocean conditions continued to worsen from Sunday. The red flags were raised in sustained winds of over twenty miles per hour. Temperatures at the oceanfront were cool compared to Sunday. Sunday started out as a gorgeous beach day, but deteriorated late afternoon. On six different occasions Sunday, lifeguards raced into the water to assist swimmers. Monday, however, the beaches were fairly empty, except for a few strollers. Under red flag conditions, swimming is illegal in the town, but surfing is still allowed.
