Disaster Training

Lots of folks driving home across Jacksonville might have thought a disaster struck there Friday afternoon. And, it did. At least, a mock disaster. This is one of North Carolina's biggest-ever anti-terrorism drills. Buildings at the old Onslow Inn site on Marine Boulevard have been collapsed, pancaked and destroyed. But, they were about to be torn down anyway, so rescue and emergency crews got the o-k from the city of Jacksonville to use them for some very realistic, non-stop training. Crews from all over North Carolina will work 12 hour shifts for the next three days and nights to try to rescue or recover all the pretend victims from that disaster scene. And when they finish, Jacksonville will tear down the old Onslow Inn, the site of the city's proposed conference center, hotel and Marine Corps Museum of the Carolinas.
