Bird Blamed for Black Out

WITN set out to find out the cause of a tri-county power outage in Beaufort, Martin and Pitt counties. Washington city officials say a bird was to blame.

The city's public information officer Carolyn Stroud said 13,000 Washington Electric Utilities customers lost power Saturday morning after a bird flew into the main substation equipment causing the breaker to short. First reports of outages were seen starting at about 10:50 a.m. until power was turned back on at noon. Washington Police, Beaufort County Sheriff officials, and Highway Patrolmen were called in to direct traffic. Lawmen tell WITN luckily no accidents were reported.
