Dare County officials fear what a hurricane could mean for the already delicate situation the Oregon Inlet faces. The winter and spring storms have pushed sand from northern beaches into the inlet. Some say the inlet is in the worst shape it has been in in years and began to close this winter. County officials say there won't be any more federal funding to dredge the inlet until October 31st. If the inlet can't flush back pressure from the rivers and sounds during a hurricane, a new inlet could form.
