A Place to Turn During the Storm

It's a place that's often overlooked for emergency shelter during an evacuation due to a major storm. A new study by researchers at the Research Triangle Institute at Research Triangle Park say assisted living facilities, like the Carolina House of Greenville, are often put on stand-by mode. This allows them to take in extra people trying to escape harm's way. These facilities were chosen because they're well stocked with medicines and first aid kits, as well as trained nurses and sometimes extra beds. In the event of a major storm threatens Eastern Carolina, pre-approved American Red Cross shelters are usually the first line of protection. That's why nursing homes and assisted living facilities we talked with urge you to call ahead to inquire about available space before showing up at their door.
