Still Calling East Kinston Home

Video will be available shortly.

It's still talked about to this very day: How the flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd six years ago destroyed several Eastern North Carolina towns and cities. Take East Kinston for example. The floods forced hundreds of families to permanently move out of this neighborhood. Before the hurricane, streets were filled with homes. Today, you can walk for several blocks and not see a single structure. While most choose to accept the government's home buyout offer some like Ben King decided to stay and make repairs. The buyout was part of one of the largest ever undertaken, buying out more than 400 hundred homes costing around $31 million.
