In North Carolina, female black bears as young as three years old can produce their first litter of cubs.
In 1971, there were 4,000 bears in North Carolina. That number rose to 11,000 by 2004. Seven-thousand of those bears are in Eastern Carolina.
Bears live in 30 coastal counties as well as 25 mountain counties in North Carolina.
Black bears are normally non-aggressive, shy creatures. They are especially protective of their cubs.
Bears remember food sources for years and probably will return there. If bears find food in one of your storage areas, move it to a more secure location.
