Former Robeson Sheriff Dies At Age Of 78

Former Robeson County Sheriff Hubert Stone has died at age 78 following an extended illness.

Stone died Monday at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton.

He was an influential county politician during his tenure as sheriff from 1978 until 1994. He tried to run for sheriff in 1998 but was defeated.

Stone's office was investigated after two men held 20 people hostage at The Robesonian newspaper in 1988. Eddie Hatcher and Timothy Jacobs implicated Stone in corruption allegations, but federal and state investigators didn't substantiate them.

Boles Funeral Home in Rowland said a graveside service is scheduled Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Rowland Cemetery.
