Authorities have scaled back their search for one of five inmates still missing after a late night escape from the Chatham County Jail.
There were 85 law enforcement officers searching for Stewart W. Baldwin Tuesday morning. By midday, that number was down to around 20 because investigators think Baldwin may have left the Pittsboro area.
Authorities apprehended the four other escapees early Tuesday morning.
Baldwin was being held on felony drug charges and and a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.
A spokesman for the sheriff's office says the five prisoners overpowered two detention officers as they entered a cell block. The inmates handcuffed the officers, put them in another part of the jail and got a key to get outside, where they scaled a 10-foot fence topped with razor wire.
