Army Sergeant Sentenced To Death

It took less than seven hours for the jury to reach a decision in the sentencing phase of the Hasan Akbar trial. The judge at Fort Bragg Thursday evening handed down the death penalty. Akbar was convicted of murdering two officers in a grenade attack. Thursday morning during a statement that lasted less than a minute, he said he was sorry. He spoke in such a low voice that even prosecutors sitting nearby had trouble hearing, with one lawyer even cupping his ear. He will be taken to military death row in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
