Lighthouse Has New Owner

The lens atop the Bodie Island lighthouse now has a new owner. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard transferred ownership of the first order Fresnel Lens to the National Park Service, citing the agencies experience in restoring the priceless artifacts. The Bodie Island light is earmarked for a year long restoration in 2008, at which time the lens will be restored at a cost of $50,000. The U.S. Coast Guard had considered removing the lens from atop the black and white tower, and replacing it with modern optics.
