A 70-year-old Good Samaritan was run over while chasing a purse snatcher at a Fort Myers, Florida Publix late Tuesday morning.
Police say an elderly woman was buying groceries when a man walked by and grabbed her purse.
The bagger and others chased the thief, who jumped into a truck.
Publix employee Vince Dambrosio saw the whole thing happen and was still shaking as he described what took place while he was on break.
"I was standing in the deli, heard a woman screaming, 'Someone stole my purse,'" said Dambrosio. "Very cowardly, to snatch a woman's purse, how much of a coward can you be?"
The victim, a bagger in his 70s, apparently reached through the window to try to get the purse when the thug took off.
Witnesses say the hero supermarket bagger held onto the truck's
window for as long as he could: about 20 feet.
That's when he fell off and under the truck.
Witnesses say the thief ran right over the Good Samaritan.
"The thief hit the old man twice," said one witness.
"There was rubber burning and smoke everywhere," said Dambrosio.
Investigators think the man suffered broken ribs. He's been taken to the hospital.
"He was complaining of chest pains and maybe some broken ribs," said Dambrosio. "He's a total hero and went above and beyond."
In all the chaos, another witness was able to get a good look at the truck.
"He was able to give a description of suspect's vehicle, along with tag
number, without ever being noticed and remained unharmed," said
Shelly Flynn of the Fort Myers Police Department.
Police say they've found the white GMC truck used in the robbery.
The suspect is described as wearing a blue shirt, a ball cap with an unknown logo and jeans.
