Reopen Date for Elementary School

After being closed for more than three months due to carbon monoxide and diesel fume leakage from the facility heating system, education officials in Hyde County have set a re-open date for Mattamuskeet Elementary School.

In early January, school faculty and students were found to have been exposed to fumes from the schools boiler causing many of them to be sick. Some parents refused to send their children back to the elementary school until the problem was solved, thus the Hyde County Board of Education was forced to shut down classes for a few days and moved the students to the Mattamuskett High School gymnasium . The state hired a industrial hygienist to check the entire heating system. School officials have slated a tentative re-open date for Monday April 18th pending a second health evaluation by the Hyde County School Board's hired hygienist.
