An area school principal is dead following a three-vehicle crash Friday morning on Highway 24 in Bogue in Western Carteret County.

State troopers say 55-year-old James Anthony Pope, principal of Morehead City Elementary School, was killed when the driver of a commercial truck, Herbert Harrison, lost control in rainy weather and collided with two vehicles, including Pope's.

Pope's two daughters were flown to Children's Hospital in Greenville. Three others, including Harrison, were sent to area hospitals.

Harrison has been charged with exceeding safe speed for the conditions and could face other charges.
