Warning About a Couple of Child Safety Seats

Recent Consumer Reports tests on child safety seats have turned up some potential risks.

Consumer Reports tested 34 safety seats. Federal standards require seats to withstand a crash test at 30 miles-per-hour. The tests show that the latch strap that holds the Combi Avatar seat in place broke loose.

Consumer Reports has rated the seat not acceptable. The tests also found the Evenflo PortAbout 5 seat detached from its base in several crash tests. It rated the seat poor when using the latch.

Consumer Reports says both seats did pass the crash-tests when using a seat belt rather than the latch attachment.
