MLK Statue Stirs Controversy

Video will be available shortly.

A statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior in Rocky Mount is being replaced by the city because many residents say they don't like it. Residents say the statue doesn't look anything like the civil rights leader and they want it fixed. City officials say they have received complaints about the statue ever since the park where it was placed opened in June of 2003. Now the city plans to change it. The current statue cost the city $58,000. Officials say the latest bid for a new statue may cost the city $140,000. City officials say they will try to sell the current statue and use that money toward the new one. In the meantime the city will go ahead with plans to have another one made whether that statue sells or not. And they say they plan on using a different artist.
